The Book Club (2018) - Movie Review

"A movie revolving around the Fifty Shades of Grey series brings back nightmares from the movies, God I hope this movie not as bad.

Book Club is the directorial debut of Bill Holderman and stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen as four best friends who have gathered together once a month for forty years to discuss the latest books as a part of their book club. But when the gang decided to read fifty shades of grey they realize that they have been missing out in there sex lives. For his directorial debut, Holderman couldn't ask for a better cast with these four ladies having multiple awards between them including some academy awards. But with this big time cast, comes big-time expectations, so Holderman is under a lot of pressure to deliver a great comedy. Did he manage to pull it off with a good high of a movie, or did he manage to waste all this talent and give us a downer?

Highs

The Chemistry Between the Big 4

With the number of awards between the four stars of the movie, it was obvious these ladies would be the standouts of this film, which they were. The chemistry between the four of them really felt natural as if they had actually been in the book club together for forty years and are the best of friends. They played off each other very well and the majority of the laughs I did get from this movie came from interactions between them.
Candice Bergen really stood out to me as well in the movie for having me laugh a good bit of the time either with the other ladies or do her own thing. The direction they were given might not have been best and sometimes they seemed to be phoning it in whenever they acted with the side characters, but as far as the chemistry between the four ladies I don't think you could ask for a better group.

Downers

Out Dated Comedy

Like I said earlier some of the comedy between the four ladies were fine but other than that I really think this movie failed as a comedy. The majority of the jokes in this movie revolve around sex or the old age of the ladies which never really hit.

I am all for laughing at some good sex jokes and all, but this movie kept hitting you over the head with them way too much. Every sentence in this movie seemed to either have a sex mention, pun, or reference in it to the point where it got exhausting. The old jokes were not better and were so basic that you just knew they were coming from a mile away. The older jokes might hit an older crowd different since they might relate to it more than I do, but for a comedy, I think this movie would be a waste of time to blaze and go see.

Lifetime Original?

The second big problem that I had with this movie was that it barely felt like it was a movie worth watching on the big screen. The overall plot of the movie screams lifetime original to me, and the movie pretty much looks and feels like it is. The cast outside of the big 4 are bland, forgettable, or just plain bad like you would expect to see in a network original movie.

The camera Angels also give you the feeling that you are watching a rerun of the golden girls or something. I wasn't expecting a big blockbuster look from this movie, but if you are going to release this movie in theaters and expect people to pay, at least make it look like it belongs on the big screen and not on cable Tv.

Overall

I know I am not the targeted demographic for this movie at all. This movie is for the older female crowd who will probably get a much bigger kick out this movie, and from the people in the screening, it seemed they did, but since this is my review I have to tell you how it hit me. You definitely want to pass that shit and wait for it to either come on DVD, Netflix, or Lifetime where it belongs.
But that is just my opinion the important thing is what did you think? Did you see Book Club yet?
