Ready Player One- Movie Review

"With all the new tech coming out now, Ready Player One might not be too far in the future, wonder how the game playing experience is stoned "

Ready Player One is the latest blockbuster by probably the greatest director of all time Steven Speilberg. It is based on the book of the same name, that pretty much rides the dick of 80's nostalgia and Steven Spielberg.  The movie follows Wade Watts who spends pretty much all of his time inside a VR game called The Oasis which allows the player to be anyone and anything they want to be. When the creator of the game dies he leaves behind three easter eggs for a player to find, and whoever finds all of them first will own The Oasis. The book has so many pop culture references that some think the property is unfilmable, but could the goat Speilberg make it work? Time to light up and find out.

Story

I personally have not read the book, but I have heard the story is different from the books, so if you are looking for a page for page adaptation, sorry. But if you are not familiar with this story, Like myself, I think the film did a great job of setting up this world and getting the action and adventure going right away. My favorite part of the movie happens so early on in the race scene (which is pretty much where most of the scenes from the trailer come from). it did seem that near the end of the film that they started to solve the quests pretty easily as the film goes on, but you understand why he has to do that. Other than that the story worked for me kept me entertained and most importantly didn't blow my high trying to figure out.

Characters

Ty Sheridan did well in the role of Wade and his Oasis Avatar Z, but I feel he was outperformed by Oliva Cook as Samantha/Art3mis. they both play their parts well and the chemistry between the two felt somewhat believe, but I feel that Cooks character was a bit more developed than his making her more memorable to me. There was a lot of other great characters in the movie, but all the characters weren't perfect. The villain played by Ben Mendelson was good, but to me, he was a little over the top. I know there was a lot of money on the line, but his character pretty much just turned into a terrorist who didn't care how many people in the real world died. Even if you did when the money I'm sure you'd be going to jail for life and the company going under. Other than him i can's think of any other character that rubbed me the wrong way, which is kinda surprising since i would have thought TJ Millers would get on my nerves.

Visuals

The main reason everyone will go out and see this movie is to see how well the oasis and other visual effects are going to look, now this movie is nothing group breaking, but this movie is beautify made. The cinematic differences between the Oasis and the real world really made the two worlds stand apart from each other.  The real world felt a little flat and whenever they went to the real world I just wanted them to go back to the oasis just as bad as everyone in the movie wanted to be in there. The game characters look great almost as if they were real, or maybe I have just really high, but this is how CGI should be looking it is almost as stunning to me as Avatar. This is a must-see in theaters on the best screen you can get in front of.

Too many pop culture references?

The main draw of this film and the book is all the pop culture references they have in them, which could be shitty if they force into the film, but of course, Speilberg didn't do that to us. Pretty much every pop culture reference feels natural when they happen and many of them are a big part of the story. There are so many references throughout the movie it is impossible to catch all of them unless you watch the film multiple times. I've seen it twice and I still cannot catch them all, guess I'll have to light another one and try again.

You can tell Speilberg was having so much fun making this movie, and I have to say I had just as much fun watching it. I'll give this film a 4 and a half joints out of 5. It is probably up there with a black panther as the best movie this year so far, only small things holding it back from a full 5, but I suggest having a nice session right before the movie and you will be blown away by this movie.
