Cargo (2018) - Netflix Movie Review

"Netflix decided they might as well try their luck in the zombie movie franchise, and it might have worked"

Cargo is the newest Netflix original movie directed by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke and stars Martin Freeman as a man who is trying to survive a zombie apocalypse, until one day he is bitten and now has 48 hours to find a safe place for his young daughter before he turns into a zombie himself. The film takes an interesting and personal approach to the zombie apocalypse not really focusing on the zombies, but on martin freeman's character and his quest to find a safe place for his daughter. The premise sounds interesting enough, but could these directors make a fresh post-apocalyptic movie, or is this just another generic zombie movie that we will forget about? Well, let's see as I will give you all the highs and all the downers and overall tell you whether or not this movie is worth blazing and turning on Netflix for.

Highs

Entertaining "Zombie" Story

Typically whenever we get a zombie movie, we get the standard people killing zombies story as they try to survive, which has gotten kinda old. Don't believe me? look at how many people still watch The Walking Dead. So when I saw this movie coming out, I figured it would kinda be the same, but luckily it wasn't. The main focus of the movie is Martin Freeman's character, Andy, as he tries to get his daughter to safety before he turns, and not really the zombie outbreak. The movie rarely focuses on killing zombies to the point where you kinda forget about them, and I think it benefits from that. It does a great job of focusing on and building the relationship with Freeman and his daughter, and later with younger female co-star Simone Landers character Thoomi.

Sure some parts of the story were kinda dumb and some of the decisions the characters made seemed really stupid and only happened so the story can continue, but it wasn't bad enough to completely take you out of the movie. You would think that a zombie movie that really doesn't focus on the zombies would become boring, but the movie did a good job of staying interesting and keeping you entertained throughout the movie.

Martin Freeman's Performance

With the focus of the movie being on Martin Freeman's character, it was up to him to make sure that the movie was interesting, and I think he put forth one of his best performance ever. He was great throughout the movie, playing a man desperate to find safety for his daughter. he really showcased his acting chops, which I honestly didn't think he had in him. I always thought he was a decent actor, but this movie really showed me that he can be a great dramatic actor with the performance he put into this role. He was captivating and believable and almost made me sad once he found out he only had 48 hours before he would turn on his daughter. This movie was only going to be as good as Martin's performance. so it was a good thing he decided to bring his a game and really shined in his role that's worth the biggest high in the movie,

Downers

Forgettable Supporting Cast

Now Freeman was outstanding in this movie, but as far as the rest of the cast, they were all pretty much forgettable. The young actress Simone Landers was okay in her role but wasn't really given anything to work with to make you remember her character. when she was one the screen with Freeman they were great together, but alone she really didn't do much to stand out and wasn't really her fault just wasn't given anything by the directors. The young actress could have been really good in her role if only she spoke a little bit more to help her stand out.

Additionally, Anothny Hayes character was super unlikable in the movie. As soon as he appeared on screen you just knew he was gonna be the guy you were gonna root against. He played the standard duchbag that you see in zombie movies and kinda wasn't needed in the movie for me. Freeman really cared this movie because if we were left with only the supporting cast, this movie definitely would have blown my high.

Overall

The last couple of Netflix originals that they dished out haven't been good, but I was quite surprised by this One. Cargo was a well put together zombie thriller that really showcased Martin Fremman's great acting Skills. If you already have Netflix, this movie is defiantly worth a hit. This is one of the bright sides of Netflix, we get surprisingly good movies like this that otherwise, wouldn't have made it to theaters.
