Super Troopers 2 - Movie Review

"I wasn't old enough to blaze when the first Super Trooper came out, so hopefully the 17-year wait for the second will be worth the 4/20 session"

Super Troopers 2 is the sequel to the 2001 hit movie Super Troopers. The movie pretty much brings back the entire cast to reprise their roles after 17 years as former state troopers who have lost their jobs after the events of the previous film but are given a second chance at law enforcement when they are asked to help transition a part of Canada into the US, along with the already established Canadian Mountie. After the first film everyone was asking for a second movie, then a few years past and everyone forgot it but that did not stop the studio until finally, they decided to release the sequel, and on one of the greatest holidays in the world. Was the movie able to strike gold and give us a stoner classic on 4/20?

Laughs

We all know a movie like this is going to have a pretty shitty story, and this one is no different, but we are all going so we can laugh our high asses off. I was excited that this movie was coming out on 4/20 to give us a good comedy to laugh at, and I'd have to say that I got a few good laughs out of it. A lot of the funny scenes that you see in some of the trailers are just as funny in the movie if not funnier the way they set them up. A lot of people probably won't like the crude kinda humor you can expect, but I found them somewhat enjoyable.

This movie, however, suffers from the typical killer of comedy sequels, a heavy reliance on the first film. They made a lot of references, jokes, and callbacks to the last movie that you can tell some people in the screening didn't really get probably because they didn't catch the first one. I was really young when the first movie came out but watched it eventually, but for someone who has never seen the first movie a lot of the callback, jokes will miss. The movie also is very reliant on what was basically the theme of this movie, Canadian jokes. They have all the classic Canadian jokes from says "sorry" a million time to them waiting to fuck mooses and syrup. They use every basic joke that you have heard a million times when it comes to Canadians, and it starts to feel like they just didn't want to write too many good jokes. Yes, they do have some good jokes in the movie, but they had plenty of dumb as hell jokes to make up for those.

Cast/Characters

Like I said earlier the cast all returned to reprise their roles, so of course, the chemistry between the group is still the same as the first movie. The two standouts would have to be Jay Chandrasekhar and Kevin Heffernan who were the main sources of most of the good jokes.  The returning cast does a good job in some scenes playing off each other and you can really tell they enjoyed doing this movie together.

Unfortunately, the Canadian Mounties they decided to add were not as good in the movie. They had some scenes that were okay, but for the most part, they were distracting from the movie trying to hard to be a Canadian stereotype.  Will Sasso is probably the worst of these offenders as the entire movie he is trying a Canadian accent and it just sounds like he is trying to impersonate a special needs person.

4/20 is a good date for a comedy to come out. Everyone is going to be stoned and trying to find something good to laugh at, so it was a good move by Fox to place Super Troopers 2 on this date. Is this a movie that you will get backed to over and over again? probably not. But for 4/20 if you are looking g for something to get some laughs out of after blazing, this might be a good choice this weekend. I'd smoke 2.5 blunts out of 5 to this movie. If you are a fan of the first one I don't see why you wouldn't like this one. Just make sure you blaze before you go!
