Breaking In - Movie Review

"What better movie to release mothers Day Weekend, than a movie about a mother fighting for her kids"

Breaking In is the latest thriller directed by James McTeigue and stars Gabrielle Union as Shaun Russel,  a mother of two who ventures out to her dead father's Malibu mansion to settle the legal work for his estate. but once they arrive they, they discover that a group of criminals are after something that her father has been hiding and will do anything to get their hands on it. Now with her kids being held hostage, Shaun becomes desperate and decided to fight back to get her kids back. what better time to release a movie about a mother fighting for her kids than mothers day. The studios know that they will get the gabby fans and the mothers out to see this movie no matter what, but is this movie worth us stoners and other movie lover time to check out?

Highs

Gabrielle Union

I think Gabrielle Union is a pretty good actress who normally puts forth good efforts in her movies and tv shows, and I feel she was about the same throughout this movie. Her character was not the most developed with pretty much all her development coming from a few conversations and a phone call but Gabby did put forth a good performance with what she was given. She played the role of a mother trying to get her kids back well and had some pretty good chemistry with her kids, although they were not the best in the movie themselves.

I also liked the fact that through the most of the movie her character just seemed like a  desperate mom trying to get her kids back. I was scared that they would turn her into a super ninja and to take out the bad guy, and yes there are some scenes where you wonder how that happened, but overall they didn't make her character seem too unrealistic.  Although her performance was nothing stellar, I thought Gabrielle was what you would expect from her in this movie.

The Main Baddy

Probably the best character other than Gabrielle Union in the movie would have to be the main bad guy, played by Billy Burke. He played the role of the Villian decent enough to be believable and although his character wasn't the most fleshed out and their plan doesn't make sense at times, I thought he was good enough to a believable villain until you account for the other people that I will talk about later. Billy Burke sometimes get a bad rap for being in bad movies and yes he is in a lot of shitty movies, but for this one, you can't blame him that the movie might not be great, at least he tried.

Downers

New Movie, Same Thriller

Now that we got the good out of the way, now we can talk about how boring and generic this movie was. They failed to really do anything new that would keep you interested in the movie at all. Most of the story is so predictable that half the people in the screening were calling out what would happen next and guess what we were all right. The characters all make the same dumb mistakes that everyone does int these thrillers that could have ended the movie and what they do try to add is dumb and barely touched on. They have this plot that Gabrielle's father who has died was this big drug dealer or something and got her arrested at some point. But do they do anything with it? Nope. They mention it in a few conversations but they never implement it into the story what so ever. I didn't think this movie was shit, but this movie does nothing creatively to keep me entertained.

Bad Guy's Henchmen

Billy Burke was not the problem when it comes to the bad guys in the movie, it was the people he decided to do the jobs with that will take you out of this movie. The henchmen are played by Levi Meaden and Richard Cabral and are by far the worse part of the movie. Levi plays the dumb crazy henchman that can't seem to do anything right while Cabral's character is just the stereotypical Hispanic gangster that likes stabbing people.

Anytime they appeared they were basically comedic relief but it always came at the wrong time and were not very funny either. The two guys are not the best of actors in the world either so their performance wasn't good which really brought the film down as well as make Billy Burke's character look like a shitty villain. Maybe he should have hired some better henchman that maybe things would have went his way in the movie.

Overall

I don't think this is one of the worse thrillers I have seen, but honestly, don't think I will remember this movie during my next session. It never made me mad, but also never got me to really invest in anything I was seeing on screen. This movie will just give you that neutral feeling. It wont blow your high, but I don't think you will get that high experience you might be looking for from this movie.
