Life of the Party- Movie Review

"Ughh maybe Melissa should have stuck with the fat jokes"

Life of the party directed by Ben Falcone and stars his wife Melissa McCarthy as Deanna Miles who recently gets a divorce from her husband and decides to go back to school and get the degree she regretted not getting many years ago, while also getting to experience all the fun of being a college kid again. This movie to me has McCarthy written all over it. I haven't been a fan of her latest films and kinda stared to get fatigue from her movies cause she does the same shit over and over again, But I try to blaze and go into every movie with a fresh and open mind hoping to be surprised. Anna Faris is kind of a hit or miss like McCarthy to me and I liked her last movie overboard. So can McCarthy make Life of the Part a surprise hit or will this movie be the same old stuff we are getting tired of seeing?

Highs

McCarthy 

Melissa McCarthy is one of those actresses that tends to stick to her same routine every movie. Normally her movies are filled with the same old fat jokes that are played out, but in this movie, she tries to reframe form those kinda jokes (kinda) and tries to do some humor that might hit a wider audience. She was also probably the best and most fleshed out character in the movie which isn't really saying much. I was glad that she didn't stick with her same routine of fat jokes, cause honestly, I have been getting tired of her last couple of movie, especially Tammy, so this kinda gave me a little hope that maybe she could make a decent movie, but I was mistaken.

Downers 

Look I tried to be positive about this movie. I scrapped the bottom of the barrel to find something good about this movie but it was so hard. I gave this movie sometime to sit with me, I smoked a bowl to see if it could lighten my mood about it, but I just kept coming to the conclusion that this movie is a piece of shit.

Cast/Characters

McCarthy was decent like I said in her performance, but man its probably because the rest of this cast sucked. It felt like pretty much everyone else in the movie either A didn't know how to act or B did not give a fuck. Molly Gordon, who plays the daughter, is terrible. She doesn't really have great comedic chemistry with anyone in the movie and can't really act at all so she really is a drag in the movie, but that is just one of many shitty performances put forth by this cast.

Not only is this cast bad, but the characters they are tasked to play are pretty much just as shitty. I honestly think every character they had in this movie is mentally ill and all pretty much fitting a typical stereotype. You got the fat one who talks about food(that wasn't McCarthy), the weird gothish one, the dumb one. Hell, they even got one of the most cliched bullies I have seen in a movie in awhile. these characters are so basic a forgettable that whenever they would bring up one of the minor characters, I had to try to remember who the hell that was. These characters feel like they belong in a bad Saturday morning high school show from the 80's, definitely not modern-day college students  McCarthy seems to be the only person that tried in this movie because everyone else sucks big time. 

Not Funny

I figured from the trailers that this movie would not be funny, but I did not think it would be this bad. I might have chuckled maybe once, but the other 99% of the time the jokes did not hit. They are some of the most basic and boring jokes you can think of that you can literally see coming from a mile away.

Not only are these jokes bad in the movie, they all last wayyyy to long. you will literally sit there 20 seconds after they crack a joke and wonder why are they still going with this joke we get it already. This movie was just made up of a bunch of bad jokes after bad jokes that lead absolutely nowhere. And yes she did stop doing the fat jokes but you still got the same of falling and hurt myself jokes over and over again that is never funny. I don't really understand what was the purpose of this movie what so ever the story did not progress properly and the jokes did not land what so ever.

Overall

This movie is utter garbage. I was so happy when the credits started to roll, so I could roll up a Jay and smoke away the bad memories this crap fest of a movie left with me. This movie Blew my high big time, and I would highly recommend that you don't waste your time, money, and especially weed to go see this movie. But hey if you are a fan of Melissa McCarthy and like even her crappest movies then you might have a good time with this, but for the ones who aren't fans, better pass this shit.
